Where is everyone from
« on: September 23, 2014, 01:31:04 PM »
Hello guys new to this site and have enjoyed reading a lot of the posts, just wondering where you folks are from and how long you have been into ginseng hunting.

I am from central West Virginia, this is my first year and I absolutely love it, I love just being out in God's creation enjoying the beauty and the peacefulness.

Hey Tazman...welcome to the site and forum.

Galion, Ohio here.

I started looking for ginseng when I was very young after reading about it in Fur Fish Game magazines.  However, with black and white pictures, this kid just couldn't pull it together on his own.  I still think I've squirrel hunted through patches of it, picked off berries and wondered what plant that was back then.

Finally, when I was 18, I got an old fella who knew about ginseng to take me out and show me some  -my dad and uncles didn't have a clue about it at that point.  I spent the next few years trying to get ginseng to grow, but had no clue how.  I mostly gave up until I got onto the Internet in the late 90s.  I actually found a website about ginseng and sent the guy and email and explained my difficulty.  He took the time to respond in detail and it filled in all the gaps of why I never saw the plants from the seed I'd picked the year before to why I couldn't grow it in a nice sunny spot under a maple tree.  I've been hooked ever since.   ;)

Brad I appreciate your comments, so now I do have a question you mentioned that you planted seeds from plants that you harvested and since I am new to this site and Ginseng hunting.   My question is now that I have planted probably 100 or more seeds from plants that I dug so far this season, how long will it be until they come up will it be next year or will it be a while.  Also what is the average percenage of plants that will normally sprout and grow.  I know you have probably had this asked several times.  I have fallen in love with ginseng.  I am in my later 40s and overweight so this is proving to be great exercize for me, as you are probably aware there are very few places in WV that are not steep hills and deep hollows.  Last week I left the truck at 8am and got back to the truck at 4:30.  I get caught up in the chase and then all of God's beauty.  I appreciate your accepting me on your forum.  I hope to have a whole lot more to talk about in the next few weeks.

God bless,

When the berries turn red, the embryos inside are not yet fully mature.  It will be about 18 months before they will germinate.  They drop off the plant, go through the winter, then continue to develop that next summer, and after the second winter are normally set to germinate the following spring assuming conditions are correct.

Percentage of planting stratified seed is much, much higher.  The seed I have this year is viability testing in the mid to high 90%s  I would anticipate germination to be in excess of 80% in a typical woodsgrown setting without heavy predator (including disease) pressure and with otherwise good growing conditions.  Wild berries tucked into the ground...I've gotten anything from 0% all the way up to 100%.

JW we'll figure it out up here in the PNW. One of the biggest advantages we have is that since it's not native to here we don't really have to worry about people being a big threat to our operations like they do in the East. I don't know anybody who has even a clue what the Ginseng plant looks like even if they walked right through a patch of it. My growing area is a pretty remote area in Western Lewis County Washington...  :) :) :)

That is a distinct advantage I hadn't thought about.
