Emergence
« on: April 21, 2012, 08:52:31 PM »
I'm from S.E. Ohio and took a stroll through the woods this past Thursday afternoon.  I saw a few wild ginseng plants beginning to emerge.  Thought I'd share a couple of pics of what they look like when they have just recently pushed out of the ground.

Nice to see those mature plants in the spring isn't it!

I just got the shade over my SELECT beds yesterday.  They started coming up about two weeks ago.  One or two, then maybe five or so.  Some stopped just under the surface of the straw.  But, the last few days they started coming on strong and the whole bed is starting to turn green.  I was going to take some pictures today but it was cold and nasty out.   -welcome to Ohio.

I still haven't gotten to check my patches in the woods, but hope to by next weekend school and work permitting.

It is always good to see plants emerge in the spring.  I have also checked some of my wild sim plantings from last fall and am happy to report at least a decent emergence.  A lot of them had just pushed through the ground and hadn't opened their leaves yet.  I'll try to get a better idea of how well an emergence and a couple of pics in a week or two when they've all had time to get out of the ground.

From checking a few wild patches I'd say that only about half had emerged last Thursday when I checked.  (I've got a couple of wild patches that I've been stewarding the last few years and know the exact locations of many of the older plants in those patches.  This is what I'm basing the 50% on.)

Now that you mention it, that is one of the things I've observed in my own plantings.  The older plants emerge last and the seedlings first in a general sort of way.

Give it a week or so yet and then if they still haven't come up, scratch around a bit and see if you can recover a few seeds.  Look for their overall condition, then split them open and see how they look.  If they look good, they might still come up this year (with the goofy weather we have had) or they might have for some reason delayed germination and will come up next spring.

Where are you located again?

Bloodroot is normally the earliest stuff that comes up here.  It sounds like you might be right on time in reality.  I think ours is a little early in some places...and in others it looks like it is hanging out and going to be on its normal schedule, which is about now at the end of April.

I agree with Brad's last post.  The ginseng in my area (S.E. Ohio) is still coming up.  Some of it has been up for a couple of weeks, and others have just pushed up in the last few days, and others yet are still hiding.  The forecast for the next week looks good though, and if we get the warmer temps they are calling for the rest of it ought to get out of the ground by next weekend.  Good Luck!
