I am new to the forum. I saw a you tube video that showed someone putting a small cloth bag over there berries to protect the berries from animals. Would the bag be placed over the berries while the berries are green? remember, I am new and asking for information. After the green berries are formed, how long does it take for the berries to turn red? I would appreciate any information. Thank you. [NO advertising links please ~Brad]

General Herb Discussions / Probably polycystic - herbs?
« on: April 06, 2015, 04:44:15 AM »
Apparently, I missed Dawn on here... oh well, maybe others can help?

I'm guessing that I'm polycystic (acne, a bit too much hair, very painful periods...). Are there any herbs / foods / practices that help you stabilize things? Currently I have to pop 1-3 advils per day in the first 1-3 days of my period, otherwise I end up throwing up and almost passing out (I'm guessing a blood pressure drop, but not sure). I used to also have high breast tenderness for a week before my period (as in, I couldn't even go down the stairs without holding them down). Cutting out milk and dairy (and maybe most sugar) seemed to have solved that. The skin thing is quite annoying, as every month there's a flush of new problems for about a week, that then slowly heals until the next month, following my hormonal changes.

While I'd love to sort out the skin and hair problems, the pain is really my biggest enemy. We're not trying for a kid yet, but we probably will be soon enough, and if I can sort things out now, that would be great.

Any advice and personal tidbits would be helpful.

Other Herbs / Vegan who's allergic to citric acid
« on: March 20, 2015, 11:47:52 PM »
In July I'm hosting a gathering of friends (10-15 of them) for the weekend for our local canal locks festival, one of whom is a vegan with citric acid allergy and there are a couple of vegetarians and the rest are omnivores.

I'm looking for recipes for a crowd that will keep the carnivores, veggies and vegans happy. I don't want to spend the weekend slaving over a hot stove but by the same virtue I don't want the veggies and the vegan to feel they are putting me to a lot of trouble. Salads are fine but given the vagaries of the British climate the weather could be anything from a heat wave to wet and cold (we once had snow in JUNE!) so I don't want us to be shivering over cold food.

I have access to the usual stuff - non-dairy spreads and "milks", cheeses, etc., vegetarian and vegan alternatives and other things as we have a very good health food store in the village and ordinary supermarkets in the vicinity.

I don't want to go down the packaged nut roast mix route so some interesting and hopefully delicious recipes would be good, particularly if the preparation work can be done in advanced.

No tomatoes please, due to the citric acid thing.

Food / Fish dilemma - how not to waste it
« on: March 19, 2015, 04:41:16 AM »
Good afternoon. Without thinking too much, I bought this long frozen Alaskan salmon. It's a little over 2lbs. It's frozen as frozen can be. Came home from the grocery and put it in the freezer. I thought to myself, that don't make sense. I can't cook that all at once. The kids don't like it and only my husband and I do and well we can only eat so much of it. Any ideas? I don't think I want to attempt cutting it frozen. I briefly read online that it can be difficult and I'm not going out and spending money on any special cutting tools. What choice do I have? I suppose I can just give some to someone after I cook the whole thing. I'm guessing just like everything else cooked fish lasts about a week. My husband is super picky and isn't a big fan of fish daily, so he will have one serving and that's it. I wish there was a way to cut it into portions and freeze accordingly.
